In order to improve optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) for long haul and large capacity transmission systems with digital coherent technology, optical fibers with low loss and large effective area (Aeff) are strongly demanded. In this paper, we calculate OSNR to quantitatively predict the impact of fiber loss and Aeff on OSNR improvement for hybrid Raman/EDFA amplified systems. The OSNR calculation is validated with 224 Gb/s DP-16QAM transmission experiments. From the calculation, pure-silica-core fiber with low loss of 0.17 dB/km and large Aeff of 110 um2 would be optimal for practical terrestrial long haul systems using hybrid Raman/EDFA amplification. |
