A study on manufacturing magnified lung micro structure reproduction models by using micro CT volumes and 3D printer

(in English) In this report, we report a manufacturing method of a magnified lung micro structure reproduction model by using a 3D printer, which is made from a segmentation result of the lung micro tissues obtained from micro CT volumes. We can observe lung micro structures including the alveolar walls, bronchiole walls, and inter lobular septa on micro CT images. Changes of lung micro structures caused by disorders can be observed on micro CT images. For observation of complicated 3D micro structures, real models manufactured by 3D printers are suitable. We segment a region including the alveolar walls, bronchiole walls, and inter lobular septa from a micro CT volume. Then, we manufacture a model from the regions at 30x magnification level by using a 3D printer. The magnified lung micro structure reproduction model was useful for intuitive understanding of lung micro structures. Scales and positional relationships of micro structures were easily understood from the model.
