Automatic Artery Extraction in Ultrasound Images for the aid of FMD test

(in English) The authors propose a method for automatically extracting and tracking
an artery region in a ultrasound temporal image sequence of the
arm or of the neck.
In Flow Mediated Dilation (FMD) test, one needs to measure the
diameter of the artery in an ultrasound image at each time in real
time in order to examine the vascular endothelial function.
The measurements require appropriate positioning of the ultrasound
probes and it is necessary to automatically extract the artery area
from an ultrasound image at each time in the sequence for the aid of
the probe positioning and for automatic diameter measuring. One of the
problems in the artery detection is that many anatomical structures
that include the vein in a given ultrasound image would have similar
shapes with the artery in a image.
In this paper, the authors propose a method to automatically extract
the artery area using the difference in temporal behaviors of them
observed when the tissues are pressed by the probe. In addition, the
authors report the results of the performance evaluation with clinical
