[Invited Talk] Tunable Light Sources for Next Generation Access Networks

(in English) Passive optical networks (PONs) have been being installed to provide broadband services worldwide. In order to meet demands for higher transmission capacity beyond 10 Gb/s in access networks, the framework of next-generation passive optical networks has been discussed and proposed, such as time and wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM) PON systems. One of key building blocks for TWDM-PON systems is a low-cost colorless ONU transceiver module. For this purpose, a cost-effective tunable laser operating up to 10 Gb/s might be an enabling key component in next generation access networks. Tunable lasers have been developed and widely used for dense WDM systems in core/metro networks, however we need some different aspects for access networks, such as low-cost, uncooled operations, energy efficiency and so on. In this paper, tunable lasers are reviewed for colorless ONUs in next-generation access networks. In particular, advanced VCSEL technologies toward athermal and widely tunable operations, ultra-high-speed & low-chirp direct modulation, and ultra-compact modulator integration are presented. Also, compact, athermal and tunable filters will be discussed.
