In DC load circuit conditions with a power supply voltage of DC14V, break operations of a load current in the range from about 1 to 10 A were conducted with a AgSnO2 contact pair at a contact opening speed in the range from 0.5 mm/s to 200 mm/s. During the operations, break arc durations were measured and the average break arc duration was calculated in each operating condition. In the case of an inductive circuit with L=20mH, no influences of contact opening speeds on break arc durations were found at 1A. Arc shortening effects with increased contact opening speeds were recognized only in certain ranges of load current levels and contact opening speeds. Even in such cases, clear inverse-proportional relationship between contact opening speeds and average break arc durations were not recognized, while metallic phase durations appeared to be in inverse proportion to contact opening speeds in certain conditions. Experimental data in a resistive circuit failed to show clear inverse proportional relationships between contact opening speeds and break arc durations, which may be influenced by stray inductance components due to, e.g., wirings. |
