A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) waveguide sensor with indium antimonide (InSb) adopted for the sensing section is proposed in the terahertz region. First, we derive a simple expression of the permittivity of InSb using experimental data. Next, we perform the eigenmode analysis of the sensing section with water as an analyte. It is shown that surface plasmon polariton modes exist in the sensing section. From the results of the eigenmode analysis, the SPR is expected to be maximum around 1.3 THz at 300 K. Then, the performance of the SPR sensor is evaluated using the FDTD method with attention to the treatment of the boundary between InSb and water. As expected, the SPR absorption peak is found to occur at 1.28 THz. Furthermore, we investigate the SPR response, showing an ability to detect a temperature change. As an application, a final consideration is given to the possibility of detecting the mixture of organic solvent and water. |
