A Load Reduction Method by the Decentralization of the Packet Payload Transfer in OpenFlow

(in English) OpenFlow is one of the technologies for realizing Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Since the traditional OpenFlow design adopts a logically centralized controller to control switches, OpenFlow controller requires Packet-In and Packet-Out methods for reactive control for packets belonging to the flows of which matching rules are undefined. When these messages contain packets themselves, forwarding causes the bottleneck in terms of bandwidth and incurs delay between the switches and the controller. In this paper, we propose OpenFlow Controller Proxy (OFCP), a method to remove the bottleneck. OFCP resides in each switch and provides the offload of the Packet-In messages. Moreover, we implement the prototype of OFCP and evaluate the performance, showing the proposed method is effective in removing the bottleneck. With evaluation, we obtain the delay reduction of 0.3ms (18%) when Packet-In message processing.
