[Encouragement Talk] Proposal and Evaluation of Redirect Process for Congestion Tolerance of EPC Signaling by Using Network Function Virtualization

(in English) Virtualized functions of EPC(Evolved Packet Core) which is mobility management system in LTE(Long Term Evolution) have been developed. Therefore, operators can flexibly add the functions of EPC into the network. The auto-scale mechanism defined in ETSI(European Telecommunications Standards Institute) NFV(Network Function Virtualization)ISG(Industry Specification Group)can add the virtualized functions into the network. However, the auto-scale mechanism cannot suppress the delay of signaling process in the functions of EPC, when the congestion occurred because of the concentration of the signaling generated after UEs(User Equipments) are Attached. The signaling causing the congestion cannot be transferred into the function added by the auto-scale mechanism. This paper proposes redirect process navigating UEs into the functions added by the auto-scale mechanism in the combination with re-Attach procedures defined in 3GPP, when the congestion occurred. And, this paper shows that the proposed method makes UEs communicate with the corresponding node within the time when the UEs cannot feel unsatisfied.
