Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It is difficult for a visually impaired individual to recognize the moving directions of escalators at their entrance. If the individual rides on the escalator of the wrong direction, he or she will stumble its step or collide with other passengers. This report proposes a method of issuing a warning sound before a visually impaired individual rides a wrong escalator. First, points of interest are extracted form video frames captured by a camera by using a corner detection operator. Then, a homography matrix between successive two frames is estimated by using RANSAC and then the two frames are registered. Finally, the moving direction of an escalator is determined form the optical flow on the points of interest. The proposed method is implemented on an Android smartphone and a desktop PC, and experimental results are shown.
