Does masculinity contribute to male facial attractiveness?
Midori Takahashi (Tokyo Univ.) HCS2014-128
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In evolutionary approach toward human perception of facial attractiveness, many studies have been revealed that females do not always perceive masculine male faces as more attractive (and they tend to prefer feminine male faces, alternatively). However, facial masculinity and femininity could not be unidirectional. In this study, perception of masculinity and femininity in male faces were measured as each factors (independently). The correlational analysis suggested that perceived femininity contributed to male facial attractiveness rated by females. In addition, although perceived masculinity had strong negative correlation with perceived femininity, when controlling perceived femininity, masculinity could contribute to male facial attractiveness.
