A Study on Discriminability of Sizes of Tactile Dot Symbols Printed on Swell Paper -- Comparison between Blind People and Sighted People --
Takahiro Yamazaki, Tetsuya Watanabe (Niigata Univ.) WIT2014-98
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We conducted an experiment to find highly discriminable combinations of tactile circular dot symbols on swell paper with blind and sighted persons as subjects. Dot diameters varied from 1 mm to 5 mm by a 0.5 mm step. These dots were presented to the subjects in a paired comparison experiment and they were asked to answer which dot was larger or both were the same size. As the result, the thresholds for 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm diameter circular dots were found to be around 0.5 mm to 0.7 mm. These values are smaller than the ones in the previous research. The thresholds were compared between blind and sighted persons and it was found that there was no significant difference for 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm diameter circular dots.
