The accelerating growth of the Internet over the last decade has brought technological advances that is reshaping our educational system. Nowadays, more and more e-learning tools are emerging with new features and capabilities. In this paper, we introduce the Web-based e-Learning System (WebELS), a cloud-based all-in-one e-Learning platform designed for higher education that provides an easy-to-use authoring tool to address the need of educators to create their own content using multimedia resources without undue complexity. Specifically, we propose a new slide-based authoring tool for creating a learning content in addition to the existing video-based authoring tool on the WebELS platform. The video-based authoring tool allows synchronization of slide presentation and pre-recorded video content taken from a lecture using that same slide presentation. This tool however lacks very useful functions, among those is updating the slide and video material for content reuse as the same courses are delivered each year. The newly proposed slide-based authoring tool complements the previous tool with functions like slide and live video stream synchronization including cursor data movement, inserting new multimedia object (image, pdf, document, audio/video), and slide re-ordering. The system design and implementation will be described in this paper. |
