Field evaluation of base station synchronization method using GPS to realize eICIC for LTE-Advanced

(in English) HetNet (heterogeneous networks) is studied intensively to meet with the explosive mobile traffic increase. HetNet is defined as a cell structure in which small cells are overlaid on a macro cell. If HetNet is applied to an urban area, “dense 3D cell structure” is formed in which small cells are densely placed in tall buildings. The authors proposed a novel eICIC (enhanced inter cell interference coordination) based control architecture called "layered cell control architecture" for this cell structure. Highly accurate time synchronization is essential to realize this control architecture. Therefore we proposed a control architecture for base station synchronization using GPS as well. The proposed architecture was implemented in an eICIC capable LTE-Advanced system. We then conducted a field experiment with the system. The result shows that less than 1us accuracy is achieved. It was also confirmed that the measured throughput was not degraded at all.
