A parallel Algorithm for Realizing the Lax-Friedrichs Scheme in Computational Fluid Dynamics and its FPGA Implementation

(in English) In the model of partial differential equations used in complex numerical simulations such as fluid analysis, it is difficult to obtain an analytical solution. Therefore, it is common to use a finite different method, which is one of numerical simulation methods, for obtaining a numerical solution. Numerical simulation methods generally require much amount of computation time, and thus many works have been done to develop special-purpose hardware for numerical simulation to shorten its computation time. In this paper, we focus on the Lax-Friedrichs scheme used to solve the one-dimensional linear advection equation, and propose a parallelized algorithm of the Lax-Friedrichs scheme to be implemented as a special-purpose circuit on the FPGA chip to shorten the computation time of numerical simulation. We implement the proposed circuit on the FPGA chip, and experimentally evaluate its performance in the simulation.
