Layered cell control architecture over inter base-station interface in a dense 3D cell structure

(in English) HetNet (heterogeneous network) is currently studied in LTE-Advanced to meet with the explosive increase of mobile traffic. HetNet is defined as a cell structure in which small cells are overlaid on a macro cell. If HetNet is applied to a metropolitan area, small-cell base stations are densely placed in hot spots as well as high-story buildings. We call this type of HetNet as “dense 3D cell structure”. In this cell structure, interference management is more complicated than in a currnet 2D cell structure. Also, frequent handovers are generated as high speed mobile stations run across many small cells in a short period.
We propose a novel network control architecture called “layered cell control architecture” to manage the complicated interference as well as the frequent handovers. In the proposed architecture, base stations are logically separated into two groups, a macro-cell layer and a small-cell layer. This architecture is achieved by eICIC (enhanced inter-cell interference cancellation) in which radio resources are divided into a macro-cell layer and a small-cell layer in time domain. We also explain the advantage of the proposed architecture as well.
