Optimal Monitoring of Power Variation in a Wireless Frame Collision Detection System

(in English) The detection of frame collisions by monitoring changes in signal strength is a promising technique that can enable more effective management and control in wireless systems. However, detection is difficult when colliding signals at the monitoring point have very different power levels and the power variation caused by collision is small. This paper presents a systematic approach to analyzing and predicting power variation in power monitoring systems with either separate or shared antennas. Theoretical formulas have been obtained for overlap-dependent power variation quantities peculiar to the frame collision detection problem. Experimental results confirm the utility of the formulas.
