CoHear: Co-location Detection of Mobile Devices using Ambient Sound

(in English) The co-location detection of mobile devices is valuable for various
applications such as ad-hoc information sharing and analysis of human
communication. Ideally, a co-location detection solution should be easy to deploy, accurate, energy efficient, scalable, and privacy・security protective. In this paper, tackling these criteria, we show the system called CoHear which uses ambient sound for co-location detection of mobile devices. CoHear extracts the ambient sound feature considering microphone's frequency response characteristic and stationaly sound. Experimental evaluation using 5 different model devices shows that CoHear discriminates 8 places with 0.86 F-measure. We also show experimental results about the energy consumption and the number of devices which can be accommodated.
