Proposal and Evaluation of a Packet Classification Algorithm Striking a Balance between Rule Lookup Performance and Rule update Performance

(in English) Network virtualization technologies realize flexible network control by setting and updating packet processing rules frequently. Existing packet classification algorithms, which find the best matching rule for an input packet, consume significant amount of computational resources especially for virtual switches. Although caching a lookup result and reusing the result could reduce the cost, they in turn need resources for updating the cache when rules are updated. This paper proposes a packet classification algorithm that strikes a balance between rule lookup performance and rule update performance. We also report the evaluation result of the algorithm measured with an extended virtual switch which bases on OSS software such as Open vSwitch and DPDK. The result shows that the proposed algorithm reduces the amount of computational resources for packet classification by almost 70% of the algorithm used by the virtual switch that we based.
