A Flow Screening Control Scheme for Flow Networks

(in English) Recently, targeted attacks for enterprise information networks occur frequently. Since a data center accommodates many enterprise customers, security enhancement of data centers becomes an urgent issue. According to such a background, IPS attracts attention for preventing intrusion into customer networks. However, exclusive IPS allocation for each customer increases equipment cost. On the other hand, shared IPS allocation for all customers decreases data throughput per customer. In order to solve this problem, we deploy OpenFlow as the base of a data center network and propose a cooperation scheme between IPS and OpenFlow. In this scheme, security level of each flow is specified. Then secure flows transferred through an IPS are off-loaded to OpenFlow cut-through routes. In order to achieve this scheme, a function for specifying flow's security level is attached to an IPS. On the other hand, a cut-through control function is attached to an OpenFlow controller. An OpenFlow controller receives flow control information from an IPS by means of a northbound interface. We implemented a prototype system and evaluated it. The evaluation results show that secure flows transferred initially via IPS were off loaded gradually by way of OpenFlow cut-through routes and thus data throughput was increased.
