This paper presents a development of a wearable tactile sensor where a PVDF film, which is a polymer piezo material, is wrapped around a finger, for measuring skin vibration elicited when the fingertip touches an object. The sensor allows users to touch directly with their bare fingertips and detects skin-propagated vibrations. The sensor output could involve users’ skin characteristics and vibrations applied to the fingertip could be estimated from the sensor output. Here, the sensor can be available to active touch as well as passive touch because the sensor does not respond to finger movements. This paper describes a basic research using a prototype of the sensor. Sensor outputs when different textures are rubbed with the fingertip and frequency response of the sensor output to vibrations applied on the fingertip are investigated. |
