Effects of the Presence of the Audience on the Violinist's Heart-Rate Variability and Complexity
Haruka Shoda, Mamiko Sakata (Doshisha Univ.), Aaron Williamon (RCM) HIP2014-85
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Shoda and Adachi (2015) reported that the presence of the audience enhances the pianist's performance when he/she performs the well-learned piece. To understand the physiological mechanism of such the audience effect, we measured ten violinists' ECGs in performing technically easy and challenging pieces in two conditions|audience-present and audience-absent|. Based on the obtained heart-rate time-series, we computed the hear-rate variability and the multiscale entropies. As a result, the violinist's heart rate and its variability increased but its complexity decreased in front of the audience when he/she performs the technically challenging piece.
