Development of a process for embedding liver tumors in 3D abdominal CT images

(in English) Recent medical practice has seen an increasing level of high definition image capturing technology such as CT and MRI scans. This has resulted in an increase in the amount of images produced for medical use, and the burden on doctors to interpret these images is also on the rise. To mitigate this burden, Computer Aided Diagnosis/Detection (CAD) technology is being developed to assist with the diagnosis process via electronic calculations. However, because it is impossible to obtain a sufficient quantity of disease samples due to problems like protecting the privacy of patients, it is difficult to specify the usefulness of that system.
In this study, an image synthesis method was developed that, in the arena of 3D abdominal CT imaging, has improved Poisson Blending technology with consideration given to tumor shape and impact on thin blood vessels. Using this method of synthesizing, CT images in which tumors exist were artificially created by referencing existing case images and imbedding tumors. Changing existing tumor size, contrast, and location enables the construction of a large quantity of artificial case images. A doctor evaluated artificial case images that were actually created, and it was confirmed that this method enables the user to construct artificial case images that are not inferior to real images.
