Measurement of modal contents in optical fibers based on fringe analysis

(in English) For mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission system, modal crosstalk (MXT) would be considerably induced by slight distortion and mismatching of modal fields in devices such as mode (de-)multiplexers and transmission fibers. Although MXT can be compensated by MIMO processing, the processing cost is increased according to the number of modes for multiplexing. If MXT in the MDM system is sufficiently suppressed, the MIMO processing can be divided into several parts for modal groups. To develop such a transmission system, an evaluation technique for modal contents on every device including fibers and (de-)multiplexers has to be established in advance. This paper suggests a measurement technique based on fringe analysis to estimate MXT, and demonstrates that it works well for a single mode fiber and a ten-mode fiber. In addition, measurement accuracy is shown with numerical simulation.
