Chemical effects and sonoluminescence in ultrasonic cavitation
Kazuya Nagamine, Ken Yamamoto (Kansai Univ.) US2014-77
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The chemical effects of ultrasonic cavitation using ultrasonic waves at 20 kHz, 400 kHz, 626 kHz, 821 kHz, and 1 MHz were compared. Sonochemical efficiency and methylene blue degradation were measured by applying ultrasonic waves to a 0.1 M aqueous solution of potassium iodine and an aqueous solution of methylene blue with absorbance adjusted to about 2.0, and using an absorptiometer to measure absorbance at wavelengths of 355 nm and 664 nm, respectively. The amount of hydrogen peroxide generated from distilled water was also measured. The chemical effects at 400 kHz were much higher than those that at 20 kHz, which is the frequency generally used for ultrasonic cleaners or in the chemical industry. The chemical effects were decreased when three kinds of alcohol (ethanol, 2-propanol, and tert-butylalcohol) were added. The spectrum of sonoluminescence in the 240–370 nm range was measured at all frequencies in Ar-saturated water and was found to be correlated with the chemical effects. Furthermore, sonoluminescence in Ar-saturated water with added alcohol was decreased.
