Synthesis and Characterization of Platinum-Supported Carbon Nanotubes and Carbon Paper Composites by One-Step Liquid-Phase Synthesis

(in English) "One-Step Liquid-Phase Synthesis" is our original one-step process which enable the synthesis of unique carbon nanomaterials (including carbon nanotubes (CNTs)) on a substrate resistance-heated in organic solvents. Recently, we successfully synthesized carbon nanomaterials (CNMs)/carbon paper (CP) composites in which the CNMs, mainly consisted of single walled CNTs (SWCNTs) with spider's web-like secondary structure, was twined around the fibers of CP substrate resistance-heated in ethanol solution containing a precursor of catalyst for CNT-growth. Hence, this study tried to deposit platinum nanoparticles on spider's web-like SWCNTs/CP composites with the motivation of developing electrode catalyst available for fuel cell. The "One-Step Liquid-Phase Synthesis" using CP substrate and ethanol solvent mixed with platinum acetylacetonate as well as cobalt acetylacetonate (precursor of catalyst for CNT-growth) successfully produced platinum nanoparticles on the CNMs/CP composites consisted of spider's web-like CNMs including SWCNTs; the existence of electrochemically active surfaces of platinum was demonstrated by the obvious peaks of hydrogen adsorption and desorption on the cyclic voltammograms.
