Effective encoding of HDR images using the SNR scalability of JPEG 2000

(in English) So far, various investigations have been done for HDR images expressed in a floating point data format.Conventional display devices cannot display HDR images directly. Therefore, tone mapping operators (TMOs) are important to generate standard 8-bit images.In this paper, we discuss an effective coding method for HDR images.In the future, the spread of display devices which accepts the higher bit depths (e.g,10,12 and 16 bits per channel).The coexistence of images with various bit depths is also predicted.We focus on two features of JPEG2000.The first feature is to be able to deal the images with the higher bit depths.The second feature is the SNR scalability which enables us to achieve a decoding with an arbitrary quality.

In the proposed method, an image generated from the common processes to the all cases for various bit depths in TMO is defined as the middle image. Only the middle image is compressed by JPEG2000.
Integer images with various bit depths are generated from only one compressed data file by the simple scaling corresponding to a desired bit depth.
