In assessing the radiation characteristics of wireless devices such as mobile phones, the conventional method for SAR measurements is
to apply an automated electric field probe scanning system to a human simulated liquid phantom. However, the dielectric constants and loss tangents
for human body parts, which consist of different types of human tissues and multi-layer structure, cannot be simulated by a simple liquid phantom.
While it is possible to design a multi-layer human head phantom with solid phantom fabrication technologies, the air space for the probe inserting hole,
which is necessary to insert the electric field probe inside the solid phantom, affects the electric field distribution inside the phantom.
This paper proposes a new method for electric field distribution measurements inside a semi-solid phantom that has potential to simulate the 3D-shape of
human body parts including the electric parameters of each human tissues. Two semi-solid eyeball phantoms are embedded in a 3D-shape semi-solid human head
phantom which was designed to simulate the average electric parameters for eyeball-ambient tissues. The fabricated semi-solid human head phantom enables 3D inside electric field
measurements by inserting an electric field probe. Moreover, after the probe is removed from the phantom, the hole created by the inserted probe is closed and
restored without any special treatment. This self-closure characteristic of the proposed semi-solid phantom can reduce the measurement errors that caused by the
above mentioned air space. Finally, the electric field distribution measurements with a real shape human head phantom have also been presented for a PIF antenna
as well as a half-wavelength dipole antenna. |
