| (in English) | When a person estimates the mental state of another person, he/she observes one’s actions in view of one’s situation and behavioral traits. In this study, we investigated the intention inferences under two conditions: whether subjects knew the agent’s behavioral traits or not. Subjects observed the agent’s pathway through a number of mazes and estimated his or her intention under three phases: Pre-study Phase (unknown behavioral traits about an agent), Study Phase 1, and Study Phase 2 (after the subject has watched a video about the agent’s pathway). We compared the subjects’ behavioral estimation values with their expected values. The results show a significant difference in the Pre-study Phase, compared to these expected values. In this phase, the subjects estimated the goal toward which the agent could proceed in a straight path to be high compared to the expected value, and this suggests that they estimated the goal under the first-person perspective. On the other hand, subjects could estimate the values properly in Study Phase 1 and 2. This suggests that they inhibit their self-perspective and use others’ perspective information. In conclusion, we suggest that it is necessary to know others’ behavioral traits in order to switch systems of intention inference from using self-perspective to using others’ perspectives. | |
