Abnormal auditory feedback and internal model in people who stutter: A behavioral study using delayed auditory feedback adaptation

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Stuttering is a fluency disorder and a suggested motor control abnormality in speech. In this study, we tested two hypotheses: compared to people who do not stutter (PWNS), (i) people who stutter (PWS) rely on auditory feedback and (ii) PWS have problems about internal auditory predictions and/or comparator mechanisms. Subjects were required to judge the simultaneity between their motor sensations and vocal sounds after inducing lag adaptation of their voices. We analyzed the judgments of PWS compared to PWNS. Our results indicated that PWS showed a higher threshold for detecting auditory delay, and this was related to less accurate detection. These results verified hypotheses (i) and (ii).
