Digital coherent optical receivers using analog-to-digital conversion at the symbol rate

(in English) This paper discusses the principle of clock extraction and requirements for the sampling rate of AD converters in digital coherent receivers. When AD conversion is done at the rate of two samples per symbol, the clock frequency is extracted from the signal intensity after fixed compensation for accumulated group-velocity dispersion of fibers in the digital domain and succeeding DA conversion. Meanwhile, the sampling phase for each polarization tributary is adjusted with the adaptive digital filter. Since the aliasing effect associated with AD conversion is removed perfectly, such a receiver can cope with long-distance transmission over 1,000km, compensating for all of the linear transmission impairments. On the other hand, in short/medium-distance transmission below 100km, linear transmission impairments are not so remarkable. In such a case, AD conversion can be done at the symbol rate. The clock is extracted in the analog external circuit, and linear transmission impairments are compensated for to some extent even in the presence of the aliasing effect. The symbol-rate sampling scheme seems attractive for low-cost implementation of digital coherent receivers for >100-Gbit/s short/medium-reach applications.
