Energy efficient distributed object storage systems by disaggregation of disks and compute nodes

(in English) Digital data has been increasing explosively and energy efficient storage systems are being needed. Elastic storage, which is the technique to achieve high energy efficiency for distributed storage systems, has been already proposed. It enables expansion or shrink of the size of a distributed storage system cluster depending on the external workloads. However, existing elastic storage techniques become relatively insufficient when the size of data stored to the storage system increases. To solve this problem, we propose the new technique to introduce elasticity to distributed storage systems using the disaggregation of disks and compute nodes. We implemented our proposal to OpenStack Swift and evaluated it. The results showed that 16% improvement of energy consumption compared with regular Swift composed of six storage nodes.
