As a precoding scheme to suppress co-channel interference among users for multiuser MIMO mobile communications, an approximate block diagonalization (BD) method that does not require feedback of channel state information (CSI) by using the second-order statistics of the channel has been proposed. However, this scheme assumes that an incidence angle distribution of propagation paths follows the Gaussian distribution and thus can hardly be applied to other distributions. To cope with such a problem, this report proposes an approximate BD scheme that estimates the incidence angle distribution from uplink received signals by using the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) with the spatial smoothing and that obtains a covariance matrix of the downlink channel from the estimated incidence angle distribution. Computer simulations under conditions of two users and mixed normal distributions with two peaks demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve exellent BER performance in a low $E_b/N_0$ region although it suffers from error floors in a high $E_b/N_0$ region owing to residual interference. |
