Evaluation of Applicability of Optical TDM Multiplexing for Cost-Effective Metro Network

(in English) We have proposed optical Layer-2 switch network (OL2SW-NW) for effective bandwidth utilization by using optical TDM multiplexing based on the technology of burst transmission of 10G-EPON and wavelength switching in large-scale metro network. Proposed NW performs to change the direction of data per TS unit without requiring packet buffers to achieve cost-effective NW by using the technology of optical TDM multiplexing. Optical TDM multiplexing can be able to communicate between single IF and multiple IFs directly by using the technology of optical burst transmission at every TS. Therefore, it is expected to reduce the required number of IF at the nodes in the OL2SW-NW compared to conventional method by using electrical SW such as layer-2 SW at the nodes located inside NW. On the other hand, there is a trade-off between decrease in the number of IFs and decrease in effective bandwidth according to the guardband for the processing of optical burst. In this paper, we evaluate the number of IFs and wavelengths with applying the technology of optical TDM multiplexing compared to that of packet multiplexing as the evaluation of NW cost.
