A study on full-duplex PAM technique in RSOA-based optical access system

(in English) Since Reflective semiconductor amplifier (RSOA) can simultaneously amplifies and modulates the input waveform, it can aggregate the optical network unit (ONU) configuration in the optical access network. However, it is difficult to modulate the high-speed upstream signal because the RSOA generally has the modulation bandwidth of only few GHz. In this paper, we have increased bit-rate of the upstream signal by using pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) modulation technique and electrical pre-equalization techniques. To erase the downstream PAM signal in the RSOA, we have also compared the PAM cancellation performances for typical cancellation techniques. By using these techniques in the RSOA-based WDM-PON, we have finally demonstrated a full-duplex 4-PAM transmission up to 4Gbit/s in a 10km single mode fiber (SMF).
