Bend Loss Reduction of a Buried Waveguide Using Reflection Waves Generated from Cladding Interfaces

(in English) We develop a new technique for reducing the bend loss in a buried waveguide using the semivectorial finite-difference beam-propagation method.It is numerically shown that a core embedded near the air region allows us to reduce the pure bend loss.Since the leaky wave caused by the bend extends as it propagates towards the outer side of the bend, a portion of the wave is reflected at the upper interface between the cladding and the air region. The reflected wave coming back to the cladding interferes with the original leaky wave, so that the resultant wave is significantly reduced depending on the phase relation between the original and reflected waves.In addition, the eigenmode field whose leaky wave is suppressed is confined well in the core, so that the transition loss is reduced.A similar situation is also expected for the wave reflected from the silicon substrate.As a result, a proper choice of the core location leads to remarkable loss reduction over a wide spectral range from 1.3 to 1.65~$mu{rm m}$.
