We perceive a certain sense of animacy in some types of motion of objects but it is not unclear which characteristics of the motion cause us such a sense. In this study, we revealed the cause of the animacy perception through psychological experiments using the motion of double-pendulum simulation. The double-pendulum equations have variety in motion from simple swinging pendulum to chaos depending on their parameters. The experimental participants are instructed to adjust the parameters in which they perceive animacy strongest and also weakest. Our results indicate we do not perceive animacy in periodical motions with little stochastic factor. Furthermore, our perception of animacy was comparatively small on most random motions. On the other hand, we perceived animacy strongly on non-stationary random motions with time structure such as the motions in which small circular movements occur irregularly. |
