High Contrast Projection Display with Spatio-temporal Screen Reflectance Modulation by Photochromism

(in English) We present the concept and the first implementation of high contrast projection display with spatio-temporal screen reflectance modulation by photochromism.
We construct a projection display whose contrast does not decrease even under ambient light such as environmental light or inter-reflection.
We use a photochromic compound (PhC) which changes its color chemically when irradiated with UV light.
A PhC painted on a screen surface can modulate its reflectance spatially by illuminating UV light from a UV-LED array.
We project an image from a visible projector onto the surface, therefore the contrast is increased.
The experiment using the prototype system shows that the contrast achieves about three times higher than a projection-only system under environmental light.
