A Proposal of Fast Edge-preserving Smoothing Filter Based on Image Gradient

(in English) As a method to remove the noises superimposed on a digital image, there is a linear low-pass filter. However, the linear low-pass filter smooths not only the noises but also the edges of the image. To cope with the problem, many nonlinear filters have been proposed so far. However, these filters are computationally expensive because the filtering is realized by the normalized convolution of the image and the filter coefficients depending on pixel values in general. In this report, we propose the fast edge-preserving smoothing filter which compresses the weak gradients of the image at low calculation cost. The effectiveness of the proposed filter is verified by some experiments.
