A Study on Preprocessing for Organ Region Segmentation -- Application of superpixels and of saliency detection --

(in English) In this study, the authors study preprocessing for segmenting organ
regions in medical images. Many researches of organ region
segmentations focus on improving representation abilities of
statistical models and/or inference abilities on the models. These
researches improved segmentation performance, but there exist some
rooms for improving preprocessing for the segmentation. In this
article, the authors investigate the role of the preprocessing in the
image segmentation: How much information can we obtain from medical
images without using statistical shape models of organs? Which organs
of bodies seriously require the statistical shape models for being
segmented? For the investigation, the authors compute super-voxels of
given images and describe the structures of those super-voxels by
classifying each voxel based on its image features and by computing
saliency mapping. The methods are explained in this manuscript and the
experimental results will be shown later.
