Proposal of an algorithm for simultaneous optimization of segmentation and a shape prior and its application to pancreas segmentation

(in English) A statistical shape model (SSM) plays an important role to provide a shape prior for organ segmentation, such as graph cuts based segmentation. Shape priors acquired by the conventional methods, however, is not always optimal in terms of an objective function for segmentation. We previously developed a method of selecting the best shape from a set of all shapes generated from an SSM. It was, however, difficult to increase the number of dimensions of the SSM. Therefore, we proposed an approximation method to increase the number of dimensions of the SSM at the sacrifice of the optimality of the objective function. In this paper, we demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of the accuracy of segmentation of pancreas from 3D abdominal CT images.
