This report proposes an optical strain gauge that utilizes mode coupling between single-mode fiber (SMF) and two-mode fiber (TMF). The excited mode in TMF depends on the incident angle and/or lateral position within the core. If the incident condition reflects deformation of a structure on which the fiber-coupling device is attached, we can detect not only the strain quantity but also the direction of the strain. While normal incidence into the core of TMF excites LP01 mode only, inclined incident up to several degree generates LP11 mode additionally. Furthermore the LP11 mode pattern rotates along with the incident angle around the fiber axis. It enables us to detect the strain direction of the structure. Two-dimensional strain gauge can be realized optically. It should be almost free from temperature compensation and static discharge which have to be taken care of when conventional sheet-type electrical strain gauges are used. |
