It is important to survey biological transient noises produced by snapping shrimp, which may be the main noise sources in ambient noise imaging (ANI) applications in coastal waters. The authors had gathered some samples of snapping shrimps in Hashirimizu Port at Yokosuka, and had measured those sounds in a laboratory conditions, previously. Then, the variation of the source level, which is the difference between maximum and minimum, had attained about 20 dB when the samples were walking around in the small cage. If the sound produced by snapping shrimp has directivity, the source level may be varied by the direction of the sample. In this study, we measured the directivities of sound produced by 8 samples of snapping shrimps gathered in 2012. Here, the directions of samples were fixed. The directivities were measured by multiple hydrophones placed around the samples. There was no remarkable directivity in the measurement results, because the variations in the directivity patterns were about 7 dB at most. Here, the variation of source level at individual sample was about 22 dB at most. Thus, it was supposed that the strength and weakness of the sound produced by each sample originated the variation of source level, but the directivity did not. Additionally, we measured the relationships between the waveforms and the source levels produced by 14 samples gathered in 2013. When the source level was weak, the main pulse, which is a part of specific waveform produced by snapping shrimp, was missing. |
