Investigation of sound image perception for sound source movements and volume changes in musical contents

(in English) 3D audio techniques can be used to reproduce arbitrary sound fields. Applications such as teleconferencing systems and distributed 3D audio rendering services assume that sound source locations are given. If sound source locations could be changed interactively in these applications, users would able to experience enhanced realism and pleasure. However, a lot of computation would be required to achieve this, and the effects of the interactive movement of sound sources on humans are unknown. In this study, we develop a spatial sound system based on a binaural sound technique requiring low computational resources, and conduct subjective tests to evaluate the effects on human subjects when sound sources locations are changed. Music consisting of multiple sound sources was used for the subjective tests, with one sound source moved at random times. Subjects listened to the music and indicated when they were aware the sound source was moving. The results of these subjective tests show that the movement of a sound source becomes more difficult to perceive as the number of sound sources increases. Moreover, this ability to perceive movement is influenced by the type of sound source.
