Next generation mobile communication networks are being designed to interwork in heterogeneous access technologies such as cellular and WiFi hotspots. To meet larger bandwidth requirements of multimedia-enriched applications and to provide connectivity to massive number of devices, the cell size would go smaller and there would be multiple overlapped cells, possibly using different link technologies and networking protocols. For such densely deployed small cells and hotspots, new technologies for supporting seamless horizontal and vertical handovers as well as simultaneous connections to heterogeneous access networks for improving performance are required. The HIMALIS (Heterogeneity Inclusion and Mobility Adaptation through Locator ID Separation) architecture that we have developed recently is a candidate technology for meeting these requirements. In this report, we present the HIMALIS three major features: communications and mobility in heterogeneous network protocols, multihoming, and security. We give an overview of its implementation, lossless handover between IPv4 and IPv6 networks, control and data plane security, and interworking with legacy applications and networks. |
