Broadband and low-noise optically amplified transmission technologies are essential for realizing high speed/capacity optical communication systems in the future. Many broadband optical amplifiers for the system, each of the amplifiers uses a combination of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and fiber Raman amplifiers (FRAs), have been reported to date. Among the amplifiers, the hybrid optical amplifier which uses a cascade of an FRA and an EDFA (HA) is promising because the amplifier has single-band and high-performance characteristics. In this paper, we propose a new HA, which consists of distributed Raman amplifier and an extended L-band EDFA having a gain band from ~1555 to 1610nm. Moreover, we clarify theoretically and experimentally the broadband and low-noise characteristics of the HA. |
