Low-loss Light Coupling to/from Multimode Polymer Optical Waveguides via 45-degree Mirrors

(in English) On-board optical interconnects are drawing much attention: in particular, optical printed circuit boards (O-PCBs) on which multimode polymer optical waveguides are integrated are expected to be a promising component. We have demonstrated the high optical properties of graded-index (GI) circular core polymer waveguides for O-PCB applications. In addition, we proposed the Mosquito method as a fabrication technique for the GI circular core waveguides. In this paper, the light coupling efficiency between polymer optical waveguides and optical transmitters or receivers via 45-degree mirrors is focused. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a GI circular-core waveguide with mirrors fabricated using the Mosquito method shows higher optical coupling efficiency than other GI rectangular- and SI rectangular- core waveguides.
