Studies on Dynamics of Submicron Particles in Suspensions Probed by High Frequency Dynamic Ultrasound Scattering Techniques

(in English) Particle sizing in range 200 nm – 2 μm was performed by dynamics ultrasound scattering (DSS) technique using a high frequency (30MHz) transducer. Although the DSS results were in good agreement with these obtained by a scanning electron microscope for the particle size below 300 nm, serious underestimation was found as the particle size increased. Since the main cause of the difference was considered to be the coupling of different dynamics, e.g., thermal diffusion and sedimentation of microparticles, a novel frequency-domain analysis utilizing the advantages of ultrasound pulses was carried out. By the technique, we succeeded in discrimination of Brownian motion and sedimentation, and found both dynamics played an important role in the particle motion for the particle size around 2 μm.
