Influence Evaluation of TX/RX IQ Imbalance for OFDM

(in English) The imperfection on orthogonal frequency converters in the transmitter and receiver causes imbalance between in-phase and quadrature received baseband signals, which is called IQ imbalance. IQ imbalance has a negative impact of inter-carrier interference (ICI) from the image signal on direct-conversion transceivers for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In this manuscript, we focus on the difference in impact of IQ imbalance between multi-carrier OFDM and single-carrier modulation. We derive an explicit analytical expression on bit error rate (BER) over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and compare it with the simulation results in the case of amplitude imbalance only, phase imbalance only and amplitude/phase imbalance. The results reveal that OFDM has a processing gain as compared with single-carrier modulation when IQ imbalance is perfectly compensated.
