[Invited Talk] Power Reduction and Demand Relaxation for Receiver by Optimizing Optical Power using BER for 10G-EPON Systems

(in English) In 10G-EPON systems, an optical power of an ONU transmitter and a dynamic range for a burst receiver of an OLT is defined for 20-km transmission distance between the ONU and the OLT. Therefore ONUs should transmit with high optical powers that meet the standard, so a transceiver in an ONU consumes over 20 % of the power in the ONU. The dynamic range should also wide enough for the standard. To reduce the optical power and the dynamic range without frame loss, this paper proposes the scheme that calculates a pre-FEC BER of received signals at the OLT and decides the optical power of the transceiver in the ONU based on the BER. The proposed scheme calculates the BER using the number of corrected error bits, and the ONU adaptively adjusts the optical power according to the decision during the discovery window. The power consumption is reduced by 250 mW without any additional devices and without degrading throughput. It is verified by simulation that the proposed scheme reduces the dynamic range.
