Adaptive leader-follower role switching based on rhythm stability -Toward modeling of dynamic infant-caregiver interaction-

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Infants often synchronize their body movement rhythm pattern with that of their caregivers. Most developmental scientists assume that infant-caregiver body synchrony engenders a maternal relationship between them and contributes to the social development of infants. If the rhythm patterns of two agents are thoroughly synchronized, each of them tends to take either the role of “leader” or “follower”. However, it is still unclear how the infant-caregiver synchrony can still stably form even when the infant’s motor ability and cognition change throughout their development process. In this study, we tried to suggest the hypothesis that the dynamics of rhythms in infant-caregiver interaction can be described as a kind of dynamical system and asymmetric motor capacities between infant and caregiver automatically lead to rhythm pattern synchrony without active control. We conducted a simulation study in which we utilized Recurrent Neural Network with Parametric Bias (RNNPB) to investigate how the asymmetric capacities of two heterogonous agents are linked to rhythm pattern synchrony as a microcosm of infant-caregiver interaction.
